Each year the archery range is a center of enthusiastic participation by campers from ages 7 to 77! Please consider serving at camp as an archery instructor, especially if the week(s) you are planning to support as staff don’t already have an archery instructor available. Archery is a great camp activity and Camp is often the only place people have access to it. You can help create unique memories in the lives of campers for years to come!
As in the past, we will be offering training for prospective instructors but there are some significant changes for 2023.
In past years, teaching archery at Camp Li-Lo-Li required a USA Archery Level I (or higher) instructor certification. Over the last decade the USA Archery instructor training curriculum has increasingly emphasized much material of little relevance or benefit to archery at Camp Li-Lo-Li but consistent with their primary aim of archery development for international competition.
In order to focus on the material most essential for a safe and successful Camp archery program as well as to make efficient use of the time staff devote to training, Camp is developing and instituting our own training curriculum this year. Along with minimizing unnecessary content, this will reduce the number of hours needed to complete the training and eliminate the (increasing) fees to obtain and renew USA Archery certifications.
The new curriculum will consist of a self-study portion using written materials provided by Camp and several hours of hands-on training that will be completed on-site at Camp. Participants will receive the self-study materials after registering and digest the material prior to arriving at Camp. A short review session to address any questions on this material and a written test to assess comprehension will be completed at the outset of the course at Camp. With that complete, the remainder of the training will be hands-on and practical including safety, range setup and operation, basic equipment setup and inspection, and teaching the basic steps of shooting. While the course is still in development, we anticipate no more than 6 hours will be needed to complete everything required at Camp.
For staff who already hold a current USA Archery instructor certification, Camp will continue to recognize them and participation in the new training program will not be required. In place of certification renewal, we anticipate creating a short video review of essential topics that all instructors will be required to view online each year prior to coming to Camp. We anticipate this being ready starting in 2024.
As in the past, archery training is open to anyone 15 years of age or older. To open the archery range at camp you must be at least 18 years of age, but younger instructors may still participate under the supervision of the instructor who opens the range.
Mark White has been teaching the USA Archery courses at Camp for many years and will be developing the new curriculum as well as providing the new hands-on training program at Camp. Please contact Mark directly at mark.lori.white@gmail.com as soon as possible to let him know that you are seeking training this year. Mark will provide you with the self-study materials (as they become available) and also coordinate when the practical course(s) at Camp will be held.
We hope these changes in our training will enable new instructors to feel confident and well-prepared to safely teach archery at Camp while making the training as accessible, time-effective and affordable (free!) as possible.
